NBA 1st Half vs 2nd Half scoring in past years has been about equal. This year there has been a lot more scoring in the 1st half. Last week, when I looked:

average 1H total: 101.4
average 2H total: 98.0

In past years, these numbers were equal.

Has anything changed? Any rule changes?

What are #s from previous years? I don't bet much NBA, but I thought 1H had always been slightly higher than 2H.

1H vs 2H by year (no OT included)

2009: 101.5 vs 98.3 (added some new data)
2008: 99.86 vs 100.04
2007: 100.06 vs 99.79
2006 98.17 vs 99.31

I started noticing that in mid December and have been waiting all this time for it to correct itself. Still waiting ...

(No explanation over here as to why it's happening)

One thing to note is that the effect is evenly spread out between 1+2Q and 3+4Q so it is indeed a phenomenon that occurs over the entire half and not something like a change in fouling behaviour at the end of the game (which would then show up in 4Q numbers only)

Do you have the avg. Final Score margin of victory for this year, and can compare it to previous years? If this year's AVG MOV is larger than others, this could be an explanation.

The split carried on for the rest of the season. Very strange imo. If we had a good reason for it it might shed light on whether we could expect it to carry on in the playoffs.

So which one of you guys was the one betting NBA 1Q overs at Pinny for every game every single day?
