View Full Version : Who Has Access To My (And Your) Privates?

This should concern every poster, and needs to be explained....

So after the little predictable brouhaha a couple of days ago with GG, I find that his PM message to me was deleted. (Not that I'm complaining about that; I've lived throught the unsolicited PM messaging era of Dan Gordon. I didn't want to hear from Dan, nor do I want to receive PM's from Gary.)

OK, that's clear.

But my deep concern begs to be alleviated by an explanation of how anyone (admin or mods) can go into my PM's at all to delete unfavorable posts?

Are "Private" messages truly "Private???" I imagine that I'm not the only one who might want to know who has access to PM's and can read them and much more amend them.

If as an admin there's a way to read the Private Messages of other posters on this board then I (and I'm pretty sure also Jon) don't know about it. Nor do I want to.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you say that you had some PM's saved in your history which were then somehow deleted?

Does Gary's account still exist/is it still active?

Perp,

I'm old. These new-fangled computers really confuse me.

Today the PM in question is back in my PM's. Maybe it never left, and I missed it. In that case, I apologize. This is the same PM that disappeared from the Forum at the same time that it disappeared from my PM's two days ago. At this point, I don't care.

But what somebody needs to do (and it's never done on an Internet Forum) is to explain the limits of a "Private Message", just how "private" it really is, and who (admin or mod) can pull it up at anytime.

Until there is a clarification, I have no more bad things to say about Jon.

Like I said, if I wanted to right now read your PM's you've got stored then I know of no way how to do that. I investigated a little and found out there's no easy way for an administrator to read PMs:

Link (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=297153),

Now, if someone is DELETING your PMs (which by the sounds of it isn't what's happening), then that means someone has your password. If that's the case then change it immediately, let us know, and we'll do our best to investigate and find out more.

I'm fading fast.

I'm hardly protecting the secret recipes of Coca-Cola and Kentucky Fried Chicken here in the PM's..

At this point, all I want to know is if ANYBODY here that average contributors don't suspect has access to private messages on the "RoughingthePunter" website."

I would think that anybody who posts here would want to know that. The rest is just a tapdance.

Just say "yes" or "no" or " I'm not sure."

I would assume that I have access to any and all PM's though I have not looked into it. So obviously, I have not read, deleted or otherwise altered anyone's PM's.

I think common sense would dictate that on any message board you should never send something via PM that you wouldn't want the owners and operators of that board to read.

My point.

PM's are not PM's. Be careful. Don't conduct gambling business over Internet gambling forums "Private Messages." You never know who is listening.

But really, it's hardly commom sense; it's done all the time. Gambling goofballs see "Private" and actually believe it.

Absolutely. On any message board I post, I would assume that the owners and operators of the board have access to the PM's. I think it would be foolish not to. I can tell you I'll never read your PM's but how the hell do you know? If something is that sensitive I would use email. This seems pretty obvious to me.

So don't sell PM's as "Private."

Not a website out there who does that until they get called on it.

You are the latest.

Just say "yes" or "no" or " I'm not sure."

A very firm and confident "no".

Are you crazy? We didn't name them "private messages." Do you think we wrote the software? They're called that so as to differentiate them from posts that everyone else can see. We have no intention of reading them but to assume that all your "private messages" on internet message boards are truly private seems to me to be the height of insanity.

If Perp Czech tell me "no," I respect it.

Well, please understand we didn't write this software ourselves and only lease it. I agree the wording "Private" isn't perfect. If there was a way we could change the wording on the software to "Personal Messages" or something similar then we'd do it.

Just when I get the issue settled with the word of Perp Czech, Jon bombards me with nonsense.

From Jon, "but to assume that all your "private messages" on internet message boards are truly private seems to me to be the height of insanity"

But you didn't explain to your new (or any of your) posters WHY that private communication was the height of insanity. They actually belive it's private. You might need to post a disclaimer.

You should have explained that it wasn't really private when you started, and not because it turned so because I am hammering it.

FIX IT, or just be the same as the rest of the goober sites.

Doesn't everyone have the expectation to assume that "private messages" are private? Otherwise, why are they advertised as "Private Mesages?"

Perp tells me they are private; that's what I am gonna respect and is good enough for me. I like Perp and Jon both, but Jon is on tilt on this. (But we'll probably send most of the stuff over the Blackberry, anyway. Call us crazy.)

But you have to come out with a consistent site policy.

Yes, I'm on tilt because I can't believe I have to explain this.

You know what I think I'm going to do? I'm going to send my SS#, my credit card numbers, my ATM code, my home alarm code and all my internet passwords to myself in a PM at EOG, Beyond Capping and LVA. I will do this because I have an absolute 100% expectation of privacy and safety of my PM's at all three of those fine establishments. I suggest everyone else do the same.

I told you Jon has gone on tilt.

Order "Site Administrators Gone Wild" on DVD or VHS.
